

Al DUQM: Two new wind energy projects are under development at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) as part of the Duqm City Renewable Energy initiative spearheaded by Naqaa Sustainable Energy, a subsidiary of Oman’s integrated clean-energy platform O-Green.
Collectively known as the Duqm North and South Wind Project (DNSWP), the initiative comprises two wind farms featuring a total of six wind turbine generators with a combined installed capacity of 58 MW. Planned across two sites within SEZAD, the projects are expected to generate around 190 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, contributing to the decarbonisation of a wind turbine manufacturing plant currently being developed by O-Green in Al Duqm.
Recently, prominent Omani multidisciplinary architectural and engineering consultancy Design Group Engineering Consultants (DGEC) announced the successful completion of its electrical design scope for the two wind energy packages.
According to DGEC, both projects have progressed from concept design and regulatory approvals to a fully tendered, construction-ready stage, with the consultancy managing the process from initial engineering through to grid-connection arrangements and permitting.
Duqm North, a 9.6 MW single-turbine development, required a comprehensive 33 kV electrical design covering approximately 2.5 kilometres from the turbine switchgear to the point of grid connection. The scope included underground cabling, trenching, integrated protection and SCADA systems, as well as a temporary power connection to support construction activities.
Duqm South, the larger of the two developments, will have a capacity of 48 MW across five turbines. Its electrical infrastructure includes 33 kV inter-array cabling, medium-voltage collection switchgear, step-up transformers, a 132 kV switchgear bay, and a nine-kilometre overhead transmission line connecting the project to the grid, located approximately eight kilometres away. The scope also includes extension works at the receiving substation.
Beyond the engineering design, DGEC was responsible for securing the necessary permits and approvals from relevant authorities and managing the grid-connection application process, taking both projects from concept through to construction readiness.
“Projects of this scale reflect the kind of end-to-end engineering ownership DGEC is built for - moving seamlessly from 33 kV collection networks to 132 kV grid-level integration under one team and one design vision”, a DGEC spokesperson said. “We are proud to support Naqaa in advancing renewable infrastructure in the Al Wusta Governorate, contributing directly to Oman’s Vision 2040 sustainability goals”.
The Duqm developments also complement a broader renewable energy expansion strategy being pursued by Naqaa and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), the clean-energy investment arm of OQ Group. Earlier in July, the partners signed agreements to develop a series of wind power projects across the Wilayats of Al Duqm, Mahout and Sadah with a combined capacity of up to 1,100 MW.
The projects are expected to utilise locally manufactured wind turbines supplied by Mawarid Turbine, a first-of-its-kind venture currently under development in Al Duqm. Backed by O-Green, the facility is planned to manufacture multi-megawatt-class wind turbines based on technology licensed from Shanghai Electric Group.
